Introduction to the plant fiend

Image of myself

My name is Lindsi Unsell. I am a senior at The University of Oklahoma and I am studying Communications. All of my Communication classes have been so interesting and relevant to everyday life. I have actually noticed myself become a better communicator and have been more aware of how others communicate around me. As a senior, I am both excited and nervous to have such limited time in school left. I feel so happy that I have come this far successfully and I can see the light at the end of this stressful yet rewarding tunnel. I also work at The Oklahoma Daily as a copy editor and hope to try my hand at some writing for the newspaper this final semester. The Daily has been one of the most rewarding things I have done at OU. I have met a niche group of people that help me connect with others outside of school that I may not have gotten the chance to meet otherwise. I love being a part of the school newspaper because I feel so much more aware of events going on locally and beyond.

I love to read very much and my goal is to work at a publishing company after I graduate. I enjoy all types of books, (as long as they are written well of course). I most definitely find myself gravitating towards fictional novels, fantasy specifically. If anyone reading this also enjoys fictitious books I highly recommend reading my favorite book, Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. This book is absolute poetry and I am obsessed with it. You'll fall in love with the characters and get lost in the pages.

My other love is plants/the environment! I have 12 house plants and I adore each and every one of them. They are my babies and when they grow I get ridiculously excited! I do my best to help out the environment when I can by reducing, reusing and recycling. It has actually been fun finding all of the ways to reduce waste. There are simple things like always bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, using bars of soap instead of plastic soap bottles, bringing lunch to class with reusable containers instead of buying at school. Changing my life in this way has opened my eyes to how easy it can be to do better for the environment and just how rewarding it is. Save the planet!

This is a little bit about me and feel free to ask more!I am excited for what is in store for this class. It is already so interesting. I have never blogged before, but this new experience is a fun one and I think it will definitely help with my creativity skills.

  1. Hey Lindsi! So you're interested in working at a publishing company? Have you heard of the show, "Romance is a Bonus Book"? It revolves around people who work at a publishing company, and since I've watched it, I appreciate the hard work people put in to create books. It's cool that you have house plants and care about the environment. I've created some cool projects from reused items, and I've loved the results.

    1. Hello Rebekah,
Yes! That is my goal. I have not heard of that show, I will have to check it out! Oh that is lovely. It makes me so happy to hear that there are other people who care about the environment too. Thank you for sharing! What are some of the projects that you have created?

  2. Hey Lindsi! I'm glad you're happy with your major and I know that will really help if you work for a publishing company! I think that would be such a cool job, and because you love reading, I know you'll love it too! I love reading too, so we have that in common. I've never read the book you mentioned but I'll have to look for it. I read this really great book over the summer: The Power by Naomi Alderman. If you like reading about strong women, I would definitely give it a shot, because it was amazing! I'm excited to see more of your posts this semester!

  3. Oh, it is so exciting to have an OU Daily connection in this class, Lindsi! The OU Daily has a fantastic Twitter feed; it's how I learn about most of the events that go into the class announcements. And especially over the past couple of years, wow, the Daily has been an essential part of campus life: we have really needed those reporters and all that reporting to keep up with what's going on. And of course I share your love of books: teaching online is my dream job, but I would have been happy as a publishing house editor too... or as a librarian. Basically: BOOKS. Anything with books works for me! And now that you are blogging, maybe you will be inspired to write a book someday and publish it as an ebook. Just like with blogging, you'd be surprised at how easy it is to create and share ebooks: no paper required! :-)

  4. Hi Lindsi,
Congratulations on graduating soon! Like you, I have many plants! Most of my plants are outside, so making sure to water my plants is a part of my daily schedule. Although this is the case, I find it relaxing to go outside and water them. It takes my mind off school and decreases my stress! I will try to read Name of the Wind. It looks so interesting! Best of luck this year!

  5. Hi Lindsi! Nice to meet you. It’s awesome that your major is Communications. I am studying Public Relations, so I understand your love of reading and writing. 6. Hi Lindsi!
First of all, best of luck finding a job at a publishing house, that would be so much fun! I'm sure you'd have a great time, especially with your writing background. I've also been working on incorporating reusable bags and containers in my life, and I would own several plants if I was any good at keeping them alive. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have inherited my family's green thumb. Again, best of luck on that job hunt and for the rest of your senior year!

  7. Hi Lindsi,

Nice to meet you (online), haha. I am also a communications major and I have loved all my classes thus far. I changed my major halfway through school and was a little nervous that I wasn’t going to enjoy it because it was a big change, but I am so happy I did. Congratulations for working at the OU daily that is huge and very exciting for your career. I hope you have a great semester and I can’t wait to check back in on your stories.

  8. It is so nice to meet you, Lindsi!
I completely understand the rollercoaster of emotion that you are feeling about being a senior and being so close to graduating, it is exciting but terrifying! That is so fun that you get to do what you love and work for OU Daily, especially because it is such a great experience and way of meeting new people. I am so excited to find other people with a passion for plants and the environment! I also have a collection of houseplants that I adore and have started working towards reusing and recycling. Good luck this semester!

  9. Hey Lindsi,

I've noticed that you are one among many in our class who have some sort of involvement in OU's entertainment sources. It sounds like you have a bright and successful future ahead of you. I am also a plant, earth, and nature lover. I am unfortunately not very successful in keeping my plants alive for very long though. One of my goals in life is to become a successful gardener, and be able to pick my fruits and veggies from my own backyard. My husband and I love going to nurseries and browsing, and every spring we spend several hundred dollars on plants that do not last through the summer. Maybe you can give me some tips? :)

It's really neat that you've invested time and effort in the OU Daily during your time here. The Daily does amazing work, I bet it's so rewarding to be in that organization! I also am a huge fan of great books. I've never heard of "Name of the Wind," I'll have to check it out sometime! I love that you are passionate about the environment and recycling. Best of luck on finishing up your senior year at OU!

  12. Hi Lindsi!

Thanks for sharing about yourself, I really enjoyed reading! My SGL from Camp Crimson is actually the sports editor at the OU Daily, so I am constantly reading stuff they put out. 15. Howdy Lindsi,
I am also a senior. I completely understand the excitement and stress that accompanies almost being graduated. I decided to go to grad school, in part to delay having to leave college and enter the real world. I think it is awesome when what we learn in class can actually be applied to our day to day lives. I am a psych major and find what a learn to be very applicable, the same way in which your communications classes have aided you.

  16. Hey Lindsi!

I'm so glad to hear that someone else has such a deep connection to their plants! Right now I am the proud plant mom of a basil plant named Lucy and a cactus named Harold. I've always loved keeping plants around, as they add life and color wherever they grow. Many of my other friends have also raved about The Name of the Wind, and it is definitely on my list of books to read! Best of luck for the rest of your senior year and all the adventures beyond!

  17. Hi Lindi,

It is lovely to meet you. I admire your ability to keep plants alive. I have three (that require almost no attention) and somehow I almost kill them constantly. I guess I am more of a mammal person. Thank you for the book recommendation, I will definitely be adding it to my list, I am always looking for more books! What do you want to do in a publishing company? Book, copy editor? Agent? Publicist? I seriously considered being an editor when I was younger, but then I discovered Psychology!

Week 7 Story: Grotto of Lust

Author's note: This story was originally told as the Grotto of Love. In this story was a man that became bored and resorted to other pleasures. These pleasures were among the sea with a siren. I will keep with the same story but change the ending and the character names and a few traits. Grotto of Lust Leorio, as with many who are given too much in life, was dissatisfied. Leorio had the most beautiful and loyal wife, Setsu, but he tired of her constant presence. In his boredom he began to think of a siren he once saw, but could not catch. She had a voice that could make tears prick your eyes and a beauty that surpassed anyone Leorio had ever set his eyes upon. He sat and thought about the way she sang and played her lute effortlessly. It all became a dizzying daydream and he could not bare the thoughts any longer. He left his wife without a thought and made his way to the emerald sea where she lived.  Once his feet sunk into the sand and he breathed in the salty air he b
