Topic Brainstorm

Mermaids Mermaid I read the story of Melusina, which correlates with mermaids. I really enjoy stories with curses from a wounded character. For example, stories like Medusa and Little Mermaid. This story about Melusina spins a tale of love, loss, broken promises and curses. I think it would be a great story to work with as there are many avenues to take. Also, when looking at mermaid stories, there were some darker avenues, like water demons that would be interesting to look into. I think mermaids are fascinating mythical creatures and would be interested in researching more lore about them. Demigod Daycare Nine Muses I do not know much about demigods or greek mythology. This story about the young demigods and goddesses is the perfect way to enter into this world. I like that the author introduced all of the characters through the muses that arrived to tell the stories. I think this is a great way to begin a story and is a possible idea for me to get started on story t

Week Two Story: The Ivory Man

Author's note: When I read the original story for this one, metamorphosis I was drawn to how romantic it is. If you have every seen the 80's film Mannequin , this story reminded me of it. When re-creating this story I wanted to change the gender and different aspects of what a woman might want from a man instead of what a man would want from a woman. I kept to the story for the most part but changed a few things. "Metamorphosis: Pigmalion" from Tony Kline. Web source . Ivory Man In the lovely town of Cyprus there lived a woman named Padme. She was quite fed up with all of the men in her town. She thought they did not see her as an intelligent artist, but only as a woman that should not busy herself with such things. In a fit of annoyance she went to her shop and began working tirelessly on a most beautiful sculpture of a man... The perfect man. The sculpture was crafted from the finest ivory. Padme made sure to make his lips full, his cheekbones high and his

Organizing with time strategies

The Psychology of Checklists Organization makes me feel calm. I love lists, planners, dates and schedules. I actually just bought myself a new planner for 2019-2020 and I am very excited to begin filling it out. I also use the reminders app on my iPhone all the time. I think reminders through checklists are very helpful, especially with the lives that many people live in western society. People have more on their plate than ever before and with the proper organizational techniques a busy schedule can be handled with ease. This article about the psychology of checklists confirmed this thought process for me. Many people try their best to have order in their lives, but it may be difficult for some. This piece informs people that having a list for tasks that are smaller to guide you toward larger goals is much more manageable and fulfilling. Simply being able to see yourself move through a checklist makes tackling a large task much easier. Many people give up half way through projects b

Technology is hard

Technology is hard I am very excited to be learning so much about online systems in this class! I always feel like I am so behind with technology, so this should be really helpful. I already feel like I have learned so much. I have never had a blog before, but it is so much fun to use! I enjoy journaling but it is so easy to forget to do it every day. This class makes it much easier to stay focused with journaling and it is also much more creative. I have used WordPress and Google Docs before but not extensively. I honestly did not know that WordPress was a place for blogging and setting up websites until now. I  bookmarked a lot of the technology tools to help me along the way. Some of them feel a little overwhelming like the cheezburger website, but I know the more I play with them the easier it will get. All of this new information is exciting and I cannot wait to learn more. I am very thankful, Laura, that you are helping us for life beyond college. I think many people forget

Thoughts on assignments

Spongebob Truthfully this class is quite unique to my other classes. There is a lot more freedom and creativity, which I enjoy. I like that we are able to somewhat create our own schedules and choose what topics suite us best. I am both nervous and intrigued by how much I am going to use my creative skills in this class. I want to get better at creatively writing and I think this class is going to help with that tremendously. The storybooks are a very good idea to help coax our minds to think outside of the box and I am excited to try out my own story. As I have mentioned before I love to read and I would like to hone my skills in writing as well. I have always worried that I am not creative enough, but I will never get better unless I try! With that thought in mind, I think the growth mindset extra credit pulls my attention the most. Growth mindset is so relevant in our lives so I am interested in learning more about it. There is a lot to soak up in this class. I am ready to be th

Inspired by Growth Mindset

Your comfort zone will kill you I LOVE the idea of growth mindset. I actually learned about it this summer during my small group communication class. The difference between fixed and growth mindset is shocking and also very educational. When I heard about both mindsets for the first time I got a little emotional, thinking I was definitely in the fixed mindset category, only doing things that I naturally excel at. I thought about my efforts in college and realized I have the tendency to stay in a comfort zone. When I think about it I get angry because I do not want to be the type of person that just gives up when things get tough. I asked my professor over the summer if this mindset could be fixed as an adult. He said it could, but it is much more difficult to break habits as we grow older. Hearing this I knew I had to change my mindset if it wanted to grow. I have been putting my efforts into getting out of my comfort zone and every time I do I feel very proud of myself. I know I h

Introduction to the plant fiend

Image of myself My name is Lindsi Unsell. I am a senior at The University of Oklahoma and I am studying Communications. All of my Communication classes have been so interesting and relevant to everyday life. I have actually noticed myself become a better communicator and have been more aware of how others communicate around me. As a senior, I am both excited and nervous to have such limited time in school left. I feel so happy that I have come this far successfully and I can see the light at the end of this stressful yet rewarding tunnel. I also work at The Oklahoma Daily as a copy editor and hope to try my hand at some writing for the newspaper this final semester. The Daily has been one of the most rewarding things I have done at OU. I have met a niche group of people that help me connect with others outside of school that I may not have gotten the chance to meet otherwise. I love being a part of the school newspaper because I feel so much more aware of events going on locall

Storybook Favorites

Disney's Hercules featuring Hades Any information I have gathered about Hades is largely dependent on the Disney cartoon Hercules. I know he resides in the Underworld and that Zeus sent him there. The introduction of this storybook does well in painting an intriguing picture for the reader by sending you directly into the mind of Persephone and her place in Hades' life. The the flame ridden introductory picture in the Underworld is a great way to pull the reader into this dark story. What catches my attention most in this Introduction is the way Hades is portrayed as someone who cares about others. He prepares feasts for his newfound subjects and greets his wife Persephone with adoration. This is such a contradictory thought process involving the God of the Underworld. Beginning the introduction in this way catches my attention and entices me to read more. The Goddess Isis The Goddess Isis is unfamiliar to me, but from the introduction I find myself wanting to know

My favorite place

The Rockies I'd like to begin this post by saying that I have a deep love for the Earth. Being outdoors is a type of therapy for me. It is a place where I feel most relaxed and present with myself. You could call me somewhat of an environmentalist as I am constantly thinking about how to lessen my carbon footprint by reducing the materials that I use, reusing the things that I have and recycling the waste. I say all this because it is difficult for me to choose one specific favorite place as I love anywhere that nature is abundant and flourishing. I will however post a photo of the most beautiful place I have seen and been, Leadville, Colorado. I went to Leadville with my boyfriend about a year ago and I fell in love with this place. The air is so clear and the landscape so utterly extraordinary. Naturally the picture does not do the place justice whatsoever, but it is a nice attempt. Below is another picture of the town of Leadville that I found from the town's website .
