Reading Notes: Adam and Eve (Part A)

Adam and Eve by Louis Ginzberg

Creation Story: God created heavens and Earth with animals, vegetation
Eve eats forbidden fruit, curses humans.
Adam: first human man, perfect body and soul, also ate forbidden fruit
Eve: made from Adam, first human woman, not as perfect as Adam, ate forbidden fruit.

The Ideal Man: Adam is born a man, about 20. He is very large and built perfectly. His sons bear single characteristics from him. i.e. his neck, forehead, voice, eyes, ears, etc.
God breathes into him a soul filled with the knowledge and pureness. He breathes it into his nostrils.
Adam's perfection was visible. God told Adam the history of mankind. All the teachers, prophets, scholars. When they would begin and end. Adam names all the animals, which was a testament to his overwhelming wisdom.  He also named himself and God.
Adam and Eve

The Fall of Satan: After God creates Adam he wants to have a celebration with the other angels. The greatest of all the angels was Satan with his 12 wings instead of 6. Satan is angry with God for saying Adam has more knowledge than he. Satan challenges Adam to name the animals put on Earth. Satan fails to name but does not want to be friendly and accept Adam. God banishes him from heaven.

Lilith: Adam was given all the animals and the Earth. He feared the Earth did not have enough resources so God took night and gave the Earth day. Adam could then sleep part of the day and not worry of resources. Adam needed a wife so God created Lilith. He created her the same way he created Adam, from the soil. Lilith of strong will and equality in heart, did not want to be chained to Adam . God told 3 angels to capture her, Lilith continued to refuse. God then cursed her with dead children...Rude. Lilith still refuses and in turn injures her own children out of spite.

Eve: Eve was made from Adam's rib so she was different. God made her from the rib becuase it was chaste. She was more complicated in order to bear children. She needs solace to comfort the way she is made (from bone). Her voice is different, she requires perfume, her emotions are more on the surface. Her hair is long to shield shame. She outlives man because she brought death into the world. Adam admires her because of her differences. She was created without his watchful eye. They marry.

Paradise: After death a soul must pass through seven portals to get to heaven.
    Portals
1) Cave of Machpelah - supervised by Adam
2) Gate of Paradise - guarded by Cherub and fire sword. If a soul passes it does so through a pillar of smoke that leads to Paradise on Earth.
3) Portal of Zebul, an entrance to heaven if worthy is admitted and Michael presents the soul to God and moves the soul to the seventh portal where it is changed into an angel.

Tree of life
In paradise there is the tree of life and the tree of knowledge.
The tree of life is so large we cannot fathom it. In the time of creation the Earth is what nourished all the plants, now there is also rain from the sky. Before Adam asked for it, there were no plants above the Earth. Adam was only to eat green from the Earth but he still enjoyed meats and wine from the angels. The animals on the Earth were completely reliant upon Adam and Eve.

Introduction to the plant fiend

Image of myself My name is Lindsi Unsell. I am a senior at The University of Oklahoma and I am studying Communications. All of my Communication classes have been so interesting and relevant to everyday life. I have actually noticed myself become a better communicator and have been more aware of how others communicate around me. As a senior, I am both excited and nervous to have such limited time in school left. I feel so happy that I have come this far successfully and I can see the light at the end of this stressful yet rewarding tunnel. I also work at The Oklahoma Daily as a copy editor and hope to try my hand at some writing for the newspaper this final semester. The Daily has been one of the most rewarding things I have done at OU. I have met a niche group of people that help me connect with others outside of school that I may not have gotten the chance to meet otherwise. I love being a part of the school newspaper because I feel so much more aware of events going on locall

Week 7 Story: Grotto of Lust

Author's note: This story was originally told as the Grotto of Love. In this story was a man that became bored and resorted to other pleasures. These pleasures were among the sea with a siren. I will keep with the same story but change the ending and the character names and a few traits. Grotto of Lust Leorio, as with many who are given too much in life, was dissatisfied. Leorio had the most beautiful and loyal wife, Setsu, but he tired of her constant presence. In his boredom he began to think of a siren he once saw, but could not catch. She had a voice that could make tears prick your eyes and a beauty that surpassed anyone Leorio had ever set his eyes upon. He sat and thought about the way she sang and played her lute effortlessly. It all became a dizzying daydream and he could not bare the thoughts any longer. He left his wife without a thought and made his way to the emerald sea where she lived.  Once his feet sunk into the sand and he breathed in the salty air he b
